Nature of Soul

Our soul travels through many cycles of birth/death and carries lot of desires. Even if body changes, the soul never change. It exits beyond birth and death…!!!

The verse 22 of Sankhya Yoga in Bhagwad Gita says,

वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय
नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि |
तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णा
न्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही || 22||

Meaning: “Shri Krishna explain the nature of the soul, reiterates the concept of rebirth, comparing it to an everyday activity. When garments become torn and useless, we discard them in favor of new ones, but in doing so we do not change ourselves. In the same manner the soul accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.”

What is Atmakaraka?

Atma Means Soul and Karaka Means Significator. So Atmakaraka is the significator of desire for a particular soul. Sun is the general atmakaraka for all, but the planet with highest degree in your natal chart is considered as your personal Atmakaraka.

The planet with the highest degree carries a wisdom you achieved through all your past births. It represents the maximum potential that is hidden inside you. Your AK has significant say in your life overall.

AK shows needs of your soul, purpose of your life…!!!

Except ketu, all other 8 planets can become Atmakaraka in Vedic astrology. As ketu is significator of moksha and moksha do not have any connection with worldly desires, ketu is not included in system of personal karakas.

How to Find Your Atmakaraka?

Even if astrology seems Latin to you, don’t worry..!!! You can still recognize your atmakaraka.

Take your birth chart report and see the degrees of your planets. Or else click here, insert your birth details (make sure you enter accurate birth timings : in 24 hours format……that matters..!!), go to birth chart section and you will find the table showing degrees(longitude) of your natal planets.

Rule for calculating AK : Every planet’s final degree is to be considered as its shows, but due to their perpetual retrograde motion, Rahu-Ketu final degrees are calculated by subtracting from 30º.

For example, consider the following table of an individual.

Sun	4-55 º
Moon	11-45 º
Mars	5-51 º
Mercury	11-44 º
Jupiter	16-05 º
Venus	23-51 º
Saturn	04-04 º
Rahu	04-25 º

In above chart, at instance, Venus with 23-51 º seems to be the highest degree planet.

But when we calculate final degrees of rahu as per rule .i.e 30 º-4.25 º , the final degree of rahu is 25.75 º which is greater than that of Venus.

So finally, rahu is said to be the atmakaraka for this individual.

If final degree of rahu is greater than any other planet, then rahu will be considered as AK. Similarly if you have the final degrees of rahu lesser than remaining planets, then the planet with most highest degree in chart will be your AK.

Result of Different Atmakaraka Planets

Atmakaraka shows desire/goal of soul for which it has taken rebirth. It represents the qualities you own as sum up of past soul journeys. It also represents challenges you will be going through in this life.

Significance of Atmakaraka (Strong/Weak/Retrograde)

The main purpose of the Atman or the soul is to become free from the cycle of birth and rebirth. This is called Moksha. Your AK has tendency to direct you towards liberation if you work on lessons it has to teach you. So Atmakaraka Planet is actually giver of Moksha…!!!

A strong AK (with good dignity in chart) signifies a strong individual, follower of self- dharma and will not be diverted by obstructions, as per vedic astrology.

A weak AK will indicate a native that will be more confused by nature, will not have focus that a strong AK can give them and as a result may end up suffering in world.
