Charan Kanya - Valor Epitome by Zaverchand Meghani

Zaverchand Meghani is one amongst the foremost of Gems who contributed to Gujarati Literature. Born in Chotila of Gujarat, he was a poet, writer, freedom fighter and a social reformer of pre-independence era in early 1900’s. He was given a title of Rashtriya Shayar (National Poet) by Mahatma Gandhi. Charan Kanya (चारण कन्या, ચારણ કન્યા) is one of the most significant literary works done by Meghani based on real life incident. This masterpiece depicts the valor of a 14 year old Chaaran Tribe Girl (Chaaran Kanya). The poem is an ultimate ode to the power of women….!!!

The Real Incident of Charan Kanya

It was the year of 1928 A.D. One evening, Zaverchand Meghani, along with his friend poet Dulabhaya Kaag was sitting in the Khajuri Ness-tribal huts of nomads in the foothills of Girnar enjoying the invitation by warmhearted people. The place was surrounded by forests of Asiatic ferocious lions.

Suddenly Meghani and others heard an angry scream of a nomadic girl named Hirbai who was running behind a roaring Lion with a huge stick in her hands. Shouting that a lion scooped and stretched away a “Hiral” named calf from their herd…!!!

Before anyone could even think of doing something, the brave girl showered two stamps of stick over body of huge fiery lion who was sitting over her favorite calf..!!!

And the Lion immediately escaped… Out of fear of this rageful, possessive and valorous girl…!!! This furious girl seemed as Lord of Death to the Lion himself..!!!

Meghani’s Reaction to Girl’s Valor

Meghani was Awestruck witnessing this incident..!! The bowl of welcome drink that he was provided by nomad family stood still and stagnant in his hands..!!! The unexpected powerful incident he saw, without even blinking of his eyes awakened his inner self..!!!

“Ohhh..!!! Was that a courage of mere 14 year old girl..????” Even the bravest of a man thinks twice before fighting with a living-attacking lion… Wasn’t she even little scared before jumping in for such a brave act…??” Meghani mumbled to himself…!!

And words depicting the brave incident and grit of the girl started to flow from Meghani’s mouth…..!! He started shivering out of anger and “Shourya Ras”….!!! His eyes became red like hot metal…!!! He stood up and became eager to run behind that lion.. But people hold him strongly..!! And the master piece named “Charan Kanya” (चारण कन्या, ચારણ કન્યા) was thus born without paper and pen, out of Meghani’s tongue..!!!!

The Masterpiece: Charan-Kanya ચારણ-કન્યા

સાવજ ગરજે !
વનરાવનનો રાજા ગરજે

ગીરકાંઠાનો કેસરી ગરજે
ઐરાવતકુળનો અરિ ગરજે
કડ્યપાતળિયો જોધ્ધો ગરજે
મોં ફાડી માતેલો ગરજે
જાણે કો જોગંદર ગરજે
નાનો એવો સમદર ગરજે !

ક્યાં ક્યાં ગરજે?
બાવળના જાળામાં ગરજે
ડુંગરના ગાળામાં ગરજે
કણબીના ખેતરમાં ગરજે
ગામ તણા પાદરમાં ગરજે
નદીઓની ભેખડમાં ગરજે
ગિરિઓની ગોહરમાં ગરજે
ઊગમણો આથમણો ગરજે
ઓરો ને આઘેરો ગરજે

થર થર કાંપે !

વાડામાં વાછડલાં કાંપે કૂબામાં બાળકડાં કાંપે

મધરાતે પંખીડાં કાંપે ઝાડતણાં પાંદડલાં કાંપે
સૂતાં ને જાગંતાં કાંપે
જડ ને ચેતન સૌ એ કાંપે

આંખ ઝબૂકે !

કેવી એની આંખ ઝબૂકે !
વાદળમાંથી વીજ ઝબૂકે જોટે ઊગીબીજ ઝબૂકે

જાણે બે અંગાર ઝબૂકે
હીરાના શણગાર ઝબૂકે

જોગંદરની ઝાળ ઝબૂકે
વીર તણી ઝંઝાળ ઝબૂકે

ટમટમતી બે જ્યોત ઝબૂકે
સામે ઊભું મોત ઝબૂકે

જડબાં ફાડે!
ડુંગર જાણે ડાચા ફાડે!
જોગી જાણે ગુફા ઉઘાડે!
જમરાજાનું દ્વાર ઉઘાડે!
પૃથ્વીનું પાતાળ ઉઘાડે!
બરછી સરખા દાંત બતાવે
લસ! લસ! કરતી જીભ ઝુલાવે.

બહાદરઊઠે!

બડકંદાર બિરાદર ઊઠે
ફરસી લેતો ચારણ ઊઠે
ખડગ ખેંચતો આહીર ઊઠે

બરછી ભાલે કાઠી ઊઠે
ઘરઘરમાંથી માટી ઊઠે

ગોબો હાથ રબારી ઊઠે
સોટો લઇ ઘરનારી ઊઠે

ગાય તણા રખવાળો ઊઠે
દૂધમલા ગોવાળો ઊઠે
મૂછે વળ દેનારા ઊઠે
ખોંખારો ખાનારા ઊઠે

માનું દૂધ પીનારા ઊઠે
જાણે આભ મિનારા ઊઠે

ઊભો રે’જે !
ત્રાડ પડી કે ઊભો રે’જે!
ગીરના કુત્તા ઊભો રે’જે!
કાયર દુત્તા ઊભો રે’જે!
પેટભરા ! તું ઊભો રે’જે!
ભૂખમરા ! તું ઊભો રે’જે!

ચોર-લૂંટારા ઊભો રે’જે!
ગા-ગોઝારા ઊભો રે’જે!

ચારણ—કન્યા !
ચૌદ વરસની ચારણ કન્યા
ચૂંદડિયાળી ચારણ કન્યા

શ્વેતસુંવાળી ચારણ-કન્યા

બાળી ભોળી ચારણ-કન્યા
લાલ હીંગોળી ચારણ-કન્યા
ઝાડ ચડંતી ચારણ-કન્યા
પહાડ ઘુમંતી ચારણ—કન્યા
જોબનવંતી ચારણ-કન્યા
આગ-ઝરંતી ચારણ-કન્યા
નેસ-નિવાસી ચારણ-કન્યા

જગદંબા-શી ચારણ-કન્યા
ડાંગ ઉઠાવે ચારણ-કન્યા
ત્રાડ ગજાવે ચારણ-કન્યા
હાથ હિલોળી ચારણ-કન્યા
પાછળ દોડી ચારણ-કન્યા

ભયથી ભાગ્યો
સિંહણ, તારો ભડવીર ભાગ્યો
રણ મેલીને કાયર ભાગ્યો
ડુંગરનો રમનારો ભાગ્યો
હાથીનો હણનારો ભાગ્યો
જોગીનાથ જટાળો ભાગ્યો
મોટો વીર મૂછાળો ભાગ્યો
નર થઇ તું નારીથી ભાગ્યો
નાનકડી છોડીથી ભાગ્યો!

Description of Poem Charan Kanya

The starting of the poem describes the ferocity of the Lion. His spine chilling roar, his fiery blazing eyes, and the terror he instills in the hearts of the people and the animals around…!! He was a form of death himself….!! Such a terror inducing lion enters the porch of the nomadic cottage where Hirbai lived. And as per the nature of this big carnivore, he picks up one of the calves tied in the herd of cattle.

Hindus, out of all communities and tribes, have always attributed a special place in their hearts and lives to Cows and Calves since ancient times. Cows not only provide with milk, ghee and butter, but also tend to reciprocate human sentiments much more than other animals do. They even worship the cow as their mother. The attachment and reverence towards them is too much..!!

Valor of Charan Kanya

Obviously than, the Hirbai lost her temper, when she saw her calf being carried away as a feast by a lion. Without even a single moment of hesitation, swinging a stick in her hand, she runs towards the Lion– How dare he touch her calf, how dare he venture close to her beloved pet. She won’t allow the calf to die, not till she stands there strong.

She roars, she burns, like Durga she jumps before the Lion. So terrifying is her spirit and valiant is her resolve that the Lion loses his vigor. Turns back and off he goes, leaving the calf behind…!!! The emotions, the bravery, the anger, the grit, the courage, the fierceness – one can see them, feel them, through words of Meghani…!!!
